식물의 개화는 잎에서 만들어진 물질이 생장점으로 이동하여 꽃눈분화가 시작되는 것으로 생각되나 그 물질은 극히 미량으로 작용하고 호르몬적인 성질을 갖고 있는 것으로 보여 그 가정적 물질을 개화호르몬이라 하고 있습니다.
