19세기 말 러시아의 토양학자 V. V. Dokuchaev는 토양은 여러 환경요인의 상호작용에 의하여 생성되는 자연체로 보았으며, 이러한 견해는 그 후 그의 제자 N. M. Sibirtsev와 K. D. Glinka에 의하여 발전ㆍ정리되어 토양을 크게 3종류로 분류하였다.
